How to Tie-dye
Introduction

I've had numerous requests to create a "How-to" page. I've also looked at several sites that give how-to instructions, and found most of them to be over-complicated, incomplete or in some cases actually inaccurate. So I decided to get out some basic information. I will be publishing a set of detailed how to books in a few months.

Tie-dye is by it's very nature an experimental art form. When someone paints a painting, for example, he can see the results of each stroke as they are made. With tie-dye you don't know how it will finally look until it is finished, processed and dried. There are usually numerous surprises. If you pay attention to both the positive and negative surprises, and learn to use them, you will gain control and be able to create effects that you would not have otherwise known about.

There is some information I won't give out, such as detailed instructions on my patterns, because they are the result of years of experimentation, and I will be publishing all of it soon. I will, however, give you the information that you need to set the dye properly, and enough basic information to at least launch you through your first few experiments. I'll also tell you where you can buy the dye and get further instructions. I would highly suggest that you work small at first--start with one shirt or a piece of material. Experiment slowly and watch your results. For me this experimental process is the fun of tie-dyeing even after 27 years.

What follows is a group of links to parts of the How To Section. They contain quite a lot of useful information on the dyeing process. This site is not and does not pretend to be a complete instruction course in tie-dye, but rather a jumping off place to start your own experimentation. Thanks for visiting our site. I hope that you find it helpful. Please email me if you find a section that doesn't make sense to you.
